How to make sales

We all want to be the hero or heroine of the story.  It is, by far, the most attractive role. The hero fights the dragon, finds love, and wins the accolades. The hero is the warrior, the king, the maiden, the beauty. It’s Luke Skywalker in Star Wars or Frodo in The Lord of the Rings. It’s Cinderella or Erin Brockovich. These heroes fight adversity, overcome challenges, and finish triumphantly. That’s who we want to be.

 

Yet, in the world of business, you’re not the hero. The customer is the hero if you are trying to sell a product or service. It’s the athlete who won the race while wearing the shoes you designed, the mother who got dinner on the table using your famous chicken rub, and the corporate executive who impressed his boss using the program you created. Your product or service helps your customer become the hero. That’s how you make sales.*

 

This is applicable in the world of technology. The market is rapidly changing. New products are replacing old ones every five years or so. Imagine if you had created the Apple IIc and were sure that it was the best possible product on the market. Can you imagine trying to sell that thing now? No, because technology has advanced way past that model. If you were determined to make your product the hero instead of your customer, then your story would have been over as soon as the Plus was released.

 

 

So how do you make the customer the hero?

 

Start with the customer

Consider your customer first. Think about their lives and what needs they have. If they are the center of the story, get as interested in them as you are in Luke’s backstory. Understand their history, their desires, their needs, and their wants. Understand who they want to be, how they are motivated, and what they spend money on. Every conversation is important, no detail is extraneous. That means you need to figure out where your customers are and how you can interact with them—virtually, on the phone, or in person.

 

Identify the problem

Every good story has a problem. The adversity is what makes it interesting. Identify what kind of giant your customer is facing. Is it hungry children and only half an hour to make dinner? Is it complicated data that needs sorting? Is it an evil villain dressed in black plastic and leather with a breathing problem? Whatever it is, name it.

 

Show that you have the solution

You have the solution to the problem that your customer is having. Think of your product or service as the GUIDE in the story. You are Obi-Wan Kenobi, you are Gandolf, and you are the Fairy God Mother. You can help the hero get from where they are (“stressed out”) to where they want to be, (“peaceful bliss”) and you know how to get them there. This may require you to first tell your customer what the problem is. For example, a mother doesn’t know why she feels so frazzled all the time. So, you tell the mother her task list is too long, and no human could possibly complete it in the time frame she has allotted. So you offer her your exceptional cleaning service that is incredibly affordable and will help cross off at least 10-15 items on her list. Your service will help her be the hero in her home—she will be less stressed and the tasks will be finished. This applies to any hero, any problem, any product.

 

Do it again

Never stop this cycle. Identify your customer, figure out the problem, show how you have the solution, then do it again. Ryan Morris, IOL podcast guest and principal consultant at Morris Management Partners, strongly encourages business leaders to have a proactive mentality, no matter the market they are in. In his words:

  • Always be asking questions you don’t know the answers to
  • Consider allowing the sun to set on your products to create space for new ones that meet the ever-changing needs of customers (think Apple IIc)
  • Nobody wakes up and decides they want to buy what you are selling, you must continue to show them why and how.
  • Customer satisfaction must be a priority or else your customers will go be someone else’s customers.

Remember, identify your customer, figure out the problem, show how you have the solution, and then do it again.

 

The role of the guide in any story is underrated. Think of Yoda, of Mr. Miyagi, of Galadriel of Lord of the Rings. The guide has the wisdom, the foresight and the courage to help the hero. It is an honorable position to be the guide. May you go forth and teach your hero to slay the dragon. May the force be with you.

Here are three trends that we felt shaped leadership throughout this year:   Human-Centered Leadership Took Center Stage: Prioritizing Our Well-being and Psychological Safety. Leaders who leaned into human connections saw stronger engagement and retention. Employees feel safe when they connect with their leaders.   Digital Strategies Became Vital: AI-driven tools, automation, and data analytics aren’t operational anymore. Now we find ourselves using AI more often to assist us in strategies. Those who embraced technology as a tool rather than a threat positioned their businesses for growth.   Purpose Over Profit: Aligning businesses' goals with social impact and sustainability earned trust and loyalty in return. Purpose-driven leadership provides a significant competitive edge by aligning a company’s mission and values with employees and customers. Leaders can inspire teams, attract top-tier talent, and build meaningful connections with customers.   Why Reflection Matters Before Action   Reflection can be easy, but it is also a strategic exercise. When we take the time to analyze what worked, what didn’t work and why, leaders can avoid making the same mistakes and increase their successes going forward. Consider these questions during reflection:   What decisions were made in 2025 that had the most impact? Where did we fall short, and what needs to change? How did we evolve, and where can we improve?   Reflection helps to create clarity, and clarity then fuels overall confidence. Without taking these steps, planning for 2026 becomes less effective and opportunities to grow could be missed.    Preparing for 2026: The Playbook   The new year will come with new demands. Here are some ways that we can prepare to tackle 2026: Having the Ability to Adapt: Everything is changing rapidly. Building teams and systems that can pivot quickly when situations arise, rather than losing focus, will lead to an uptick in success. Creating cultures that are open to experimentation and learning can make it easier. Invest in Furthering Digital Leadership Skills: AI and automation continue to deepen their influence on today’s business world. As leaders, we need to ensure that we understand not only the tools but also the ethical and strategic implications that technology brings to the table. Digital literacy is now a necessary leadership skill. Elevate Our Emotional Intelligence: Empathy and communication will remain a crucial part in work environments. Leaders who can connect authentically will inspire trust and loyalty during times of uncertainty. Build Resilience Through Scenario Planning: Prepare for unpredictability by mapping out multiple outcomes. Scenario planning is a crucial skill for leaders, as it enables them to anticipate a wide range of potential risks, adapt to changing conditions, and develop proactive strategies before challenges fully materialize.   Mindset for the Future Leaders who embrace a growth-focused mindset will see rewards for their curiosity, courage, and collaboration. The Five Pillars For Life & IOL
Leadership is not just about influence or success—it’s about living out values that endure. For me, the Five Pillars of IOL—Faith, Family, Foundation, Leadership, and Work—are more than concepts. They are the lived experiences that have shaped my journey as CEO of CCB Technology, founder of Impact of Leadership, and as a husband, father, and second-generation business owner.     Faith: The Compass of Leadership   Faith has carried me through seasons of uncertainty. I remember the summer after my first year at the University of Tennessee when I considered dropping out. My father wouldn’t allow it. He reminded me that commitment to a goal builds strength and wisdom I didn’t yet realize I needed. That moment taught me that God was in control, even when I doubted myself.   Faith has been the anchor in my career—whether navigating the challenges of leading CCB Technology or launching Impact of Leadership. It’s the belief that transformation is possible, that courage is fueled by trust in God, and that nothing is impossible.   Scripture: Luke 1:37 – “For nothing will be impossible with God.”   Family: The Heart of Leadership   Family is the heartbeat of my leadership. CCB Technology began in my parents’ basement 33 years ago, and today, I carry their legacy forward. When I was inducted into the Wisconsin Titan 100 Hall of Fame, I felt overwhelmed standing among leaders of much larger companies. But then I realized—it wasn’t about me. It was about honoring the foundation my parents built and the employees who continue to grow that vision.   Having my mom attend the ceremony was one of the most meaningful moments of my career. It reminded me that leadership is about loyalty, connection, and accountability to those who matter most. At home, being a husband to Lori for 24 years and father to four children keeps me grounded in what truly matters.   Scripture: 1 Timothy 5:8 – “But if anyone does not provide for his relatives… he has denied the faith.”   Foundation: Serving Others with Purpose   My dad often said: “Serving Those That Serve Others!” That phrase has become the cornerstone of my leadership. Foundation, for me, is not just about stability—it’s about serving others with purpose so they know they matter.   At CCB Technology, our mission has always been to help clients achieve their goals and dreams through technology. But beyond IT solutions, the deeper calling is to serve people—employees, customers, and community—with respect, encouragement, and care.   This foundation reminds me to pray first and seek the Lord as my anchor when making decisions, whether small or large. It’s through prayer and service that clarity comes, and it’s through serving others that leadership finds its true meaning.   Scripture: Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart… and he will make straight your paths.”   Leadership: Influence with Intention   Leadership, for me, is about service and humility. In 2018, I founded Impact of Leadership (IOL) to encourage leaders who often feel isolated. Through podcasts, coaching, and training, I wanted to remind them: you’re not alone, and success requires hard work and commitment.   Today, the IOL podcast has reached listeners in 104 countries. Sharing stories of leadership journeys is my way of pouring into the next generation—helping them see that while they may be at the starting line, others have walked the path before them.   Scripture: Joshua 1:9 – “Be strong and courageous… for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”   Work: Vision in Action   Work is where vision becomes reality. At CCB Technology, our mission is to help clients achieve their goals through IT solutions. Growth has come in many waves—expanding managed services, acquiring MSPs, and building hubs across the U.S.—but the heart of our work is people.   I’ve learned that leaders control the speed of the business. Sometimes you need to slow down; other times, you push the pedal. It can be scary, but trusting your gut and leading with purpose keeps the team aligned.   Work is not just about results—it’s about showing up with excellence and passion every day. That’s how we honor God and serve others.   Scripture: Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do… do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.”   Living the Five Pillars   Faith anchors me. Family grounds me. Foundation reminds me to serve others with purpose. Leadership elevates me. Work expresses me. Together, these pillars form the framework of my life and leadership.   My dad once told me: “Make a living, but don’t forget to live a life.” That wisdom continues to guide me.
